Up to 20 die after quake triggers Tsunami in Samoa

A powerful 8.0 magnitude earthquake generated Pacific tsunami on Wednesday, killing an unknown number …

LALOMANU, Samoa – A Samoan reporter says tsunami victims "are everywhere" in a hospital near a hard-hit area and the dead could number up to 20. Associated Press reporter Keni Lesa said three or four villages on the popular tourist coast near the southern town of Lalomanu on Samoa's main island of Upolu had been "wiped out" by waves that roared ashore early Wednesday.

Lesa said he had visited the town's main hospital where "there are bodies everywhere," including at least one child.

The Samoan government has not yet confirmed fatalities. Officials in neighboring American Samoa say at least 14 people have been killed there.

Deadly tsunami in Pacific islands

A tsunami triggered by a strong quake in the South Pacific has killed at least 28 people in Samoa, say reports. Samoa's delegate to the US Congress, Eni Faleomavaega, told AFP thousands of people had been left homeless.

Dr Lemalu Fiu, at a hospital in the Samoan capital, Apia, said the number of casualties was expected to rise as people arrived from coastal areas.

An 8.3-magnitude quake struck at 1748 GMT, generating 15ft (4.5m) waves in some areas of Samoa and American Samoa.

The Samoa islands comprise two separate entities - the nation of Samoa and American Samoa, a US territory - with a total population of about 250,000 people.

A tsunami warning was issued, but it has now been cancelled.

"Some of the areas there are only a few feet above sea level, so you can imagine the devastation," said Mr Faleomavaega.

"It caused severe damage to property, there are cars floating everywhere."

The Red Cross said at least 28 people had been killed in the region, reported AFP - 14 each in Samoa and American Samoa.

Talutala Mauala, Secretary General of the Red Cross in Samoa, said she was travelling to the country's south coast, where injuries had also been reported.

"We won't know the full extent of the damage until we get there and see for ourselves," she said.

Ms Mauala said it could take many months for people to rebuild their homes.

An Associated Press reporter said he had seen "bodies everywhere" in the main hospital in Lalomanu, on Samoa's main island of Upolu, including at least one child.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency has reported that three South Koreans were among the dead and one is still missing.

Beaches gone

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) said the quake struck at a depth of 33km (20 miles) some 190km from Apia. Waves of 5.1ft (1.57m) waves hit Apia and Pago Pago, American Samoa.

Radio New Zealand quoted Samoan residents as saying that villages were inundated and homes and cars swept away.

"I can confirm there is damage, I can confirm there are deaths and I can confirm there are casualties," a Western Samoa police spokeswoman told Reuters.

"I cannot say any more at the moment."

Samoalive News said local radio stations had been receiving reported of high sea swells hitting coastal areas on the eastern and southern side of Upolu island

"School has been called off for the day with tsunami warnings calling for people to head to higher grounds," the website said.

Witnesses have reported scenes of destruction.

"It's horrible... The village is gone and my once beautiful beach front villa has now being submerged in water," Josh Nayangu told the BBC after fleeing the area on a small fishing boat with his wife and son.

Ula Osasa-Mano, who was visiting family on the island, told the BBC the water along the Apia seawall was turbulent.

"The water was kind of swirling like a spa pool outwards [towards] the rim of the lagoon and in a few seconds the water sunk," Ula Osasa-Mano said.

Tsunami kills 14 in American Samoa: local radio

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Five tsunami waves killed 14 people in American Samoa on Wednesday, a local radio announcer said by telephone from the South Pacific island.

"As of right now, everybody is up in the high mountain ranges," said Senetenari Malele, announcer for local radio station Showers of Blessings. He said the local weather authority had released a statement with 14 dead in the last hour.

8.0-magnitude earthquake triggers village-flattening waves in South Pacific

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa - A powerful Pacific Ocean earthquake spawned towering tsunami waves that swept ashore on Samoa and American Samoa early Tuesday, flattening villages, killing at least 82 people and leaving dozens of workers missing at devastated National Park Service facilities.

Cars and people were swept out to sea by the fast-churning water as survivors fled to high ground, where they remained huddled hours later. Signs of devastation were everywhere, with a giant boat getting washed ashore and coming to rest on the edge of a highway and floodwaters swallowing up cars and homes.

Samoan police commissioner Lilo Maiava told The Associated Press that police had confirmed 63 deaths, and officials were still searching the devastated areas, so the number of deaths was likely to rise soon.

Check out the song and lyrics Of
Miley Cyrus's Party in the USA -- "Everything is gonna be okay
"

The lyrics:

I don't know, I don't care
Cause all we ever do is fight
And I realize it's the end but that's alright
I never understood, never tried to save the day
I never got the chance
Everything will be okay

Everything is gonna be okay (okay)
Everything is gonna be okay (okay)
Well i guess there's nothing left to say (okay)
Everything is gonna be okay

I can try to fight but the words aren't really there
And I promise you
Your asking me and I don't care
I never understood, never tried to make a change
I never got the chance
Everything will be okay

Everything is gonna be okay (okay)
Everything is gonna be okay (okay)
Well i guess there's nothing left to say (okay)
Everything is gonna be okay

Now I know that everything is gonna be okay
Now I know that everything is gonna be okay
Now I know that everything is gonna be okay
Now I know that everything is gonna be okay

Miley Cyrus is having a Party in the USA

Miley Cyrus' Party in the USA
(Lyric + Video)
In OnScreen & Music by Susie , on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, 10:00 AM (PDT)

We tried not to, but we can't help it, we love Miley Cyrus' new song. Yes, we know it's Miley Cyrus, but you have to admit, she know how to sing a fun, totally catchy song. And "Party in the USA" is definitely one of those.

You know this song is going to be the big anthem for the rest of the summer. It's definitely a lot more pop than what Miley Cyrus usually sings, and we think it's going to be really huge. But we have a feeling it could get old fast with every radio station playing it over and over again.

We love that the song is so "happy" and is about how music can make everything better. No matter where you are or how alone you are, when your favorite song comes on, everything is all right.

One thing we've heard, though, is that this version is the pre-edited version and in the final version, Miley uses Kanye's name instead of Jay-Z when she sings "And Jay-Z was playing on the radio." If this is true, it's too bad because we much prefer Jay-Z to Kanye.

What do you think of Miley Cyrus' new song? Catchy, huh?

Lyric of the song Party in the USA

I hopped off the plane at LAX
with a dream and my cardigan
welcome to the land of fame excess,
am I gonna fit in?

Jumped in the cab,
Here I am for the first time
Look to the right and I see the Hollywood sign
This is all so crazy
Everybody seems so famous

My tummys turnin and I'm feelin kinda home sick
Too much pressure and I'm nervous,
That's when the taxi man turned on the radio
and a Jay Z song was on
and the Jay Z song was on
and the Jay Z song was on

CHORUS:
So I put my hands up
They’re playing my song,
And the butterfly fly away
Noddin’ my head like yea
Movin my hips like yea
I got my hands up,
They’re playin my song
I know im gonna be ok
Yea, It's a party in the USA
Yea, It's a party in the USA

Get to the club in my taxi cab
Everybody's lookin at me now
Like “whos that chick, thats rockin’ kicks?
She gotta be from out of town”

So hard with my girls all around me
Its definitely not a Nashville party
Cause’ all I see are stilletos
I guess I never got the memo

My tummys turnin and I'm feelin kinda home sick
Too much pressure and I'm nervous
That's when the D.J. dropped my favorite tune
and a Britney song was on
and the Britney song was on
and the Britney song was on

CHORUS:
So I put my hands up
They’re playing my song,
And the butterfly fly away
Noddin’ my head like yea
Movin my hips like yea
I got my hands up,
They’re playin my song
I know im gonna be ok
Yea, It's a party in the USA
Yea, It's a party in the USA

Feel like hoppin' on a flight (on a flight)
Back to my hometown tonight (town tonight)
Something stops me everytime (everytime)
The DJ plays my song and I feel alright

Miley Cyrus new single “Party in the USA” is one of the news songs set to appear in Miley’s upcoming first mini album “The Time of Our Lives.” This track contains “semi-autobiographical” lyrics that revolve around her, move from Tennessee to California.

New "Hermione Granger"

Hermione Granger - As an Actress and Fashion Icon

Cover Story: Bewitching Emma by SYIDA LIZTA AMIRUL IHSAN
2009/07/26

Emma Watson, best known as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, has left her girlish looks behind even as she blooms as actress and fashion icon. SYIDA LIZTA AMIRUL IHSAN writes.

Watson is the new face of Burberry, picked for her “classic beauty and great character”.
MOVE over, Megan Fox. The real summer siren is Emma Watson, the 19-year-old British star who plays Hermione Granger, the brainy pal of wizard protege Harry Potter in J.K. Rowling’s popular series.

While Megan Fox as Mikaela Banes sizzles with her sex appeal (although I personally admire her hair and lip gloss, always unscathed by sandstorms and giant robots) in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Watson charms the crowd with her down-to-earth classic looks in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Since the first Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, released in November 2001, Watson has grown into a beautiful young lady.

Gone are her girlish grin and adorable fringe that matched her geek character — she was even called “mental” by Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) in the movie for being too clever and goodie-two-shoes.

That look has been replaced with shoulder-length wavy hair, knit tops and jeans which she wears throughout the movie. And while watching the Quidditch game, she is decked in a double-breasted jacket.

In a black full length Alice Temperley dress at this year’s Bafta Awards.

That Watson casts a powerful spell on her fans is an open secret.

One online poll, conducted by AOL’s Moviefone.com and Bebo.com a few days before Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hit the cinemas, saw 39 per cent of respondents saying Granger was their favourite character.

The poll, quoted in an article by Reuters, also said that 51 per cent thought Watson “would have the best post-Potter career, with a large majority approving the idea of her appearing naked”!

The actress has been quoted saying that she would only be prepared to strip for a movie made by Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, the man who made the 1987 Oscar-winning movie, The Last Emperor.

Born in Paris to lawyers Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, she told Paste magazine that she would be attending Ivy League Brown University in Rhode Island “to read literature” in September.

But that hasn’t stopped her from becoming the next big thing in the fashion world.

Style.com praises Watson’s transformation from “gawky drama student to fashion’s newest darling” as “nothing short of magical”.

She has been photographed in clothes from Rodarte, Proenza Schouler and Chanel and was given front row seats at the Paris Fashion Week earlier this year.

Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld photographed her as a nun for French magazine Crash, according to style.com.

In her official website, Watson says she rarely uses stylists, preferring to dress herself.

In February, she wore a black full length Temperley London dress to the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) Awards at which she was a presenter.

Last year, she was in a short Burberry from the Spring 2008 collection at the Burberry and Vanity Fair Portraits VIP viewing at London’s National Portrait Gallery.

Two years ago, while attending premieres for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in both London and Los Angeles, she was in Chanel haute couture and ready-to-wear dresses, respectively.

Watson has made it clear that Temperley London and Burberry (both British) are her favourites, the latter of course, the icing on Watson’s cake.

Creative director Christopher Bailey, whose take on this 153-year-old brand is both classic and daring, picked her to front the brand’s newest ad campaign.

“Having known and admired the lovely Emma Watson for quite some time, she was the obvious choice for this campaign which, like the images she fronts, has a classic beauty, a great character and a modern edge. Emma’s charm, intellect and brilliant sense of fun made the whole shoot feel like a picnic on the Thames,” Bailey said.

The Autumn/Winter 2009 campaign was shot in Westminster, a historic part of London and at the home of Burberry’s new global headquarters, Horseferry House.

Bailey wanted the images shot by fashion photographer Mario Testino to represent both the rich history and the modernity of Burberry while reflecting quiet beauty, timelessness and strength.

From child star to Burberry girl at age 19, Watson, just like the top-of-the-class student she plays, seems to have mastered the spell for success.

Get well soon Steven Tyler of Aerosmith

Aerosmith postpones concert after Tyler's fall

STURGIS, South Dakota (AP) - Aerosmith's Steven Tyler suffered head, neck and shoulder injuries in a tumble from the stage at a South Dakota show, a concert spokesman said Thursday, and the audience thought it was part of his hip-shaking act until he didn't get up.

Tyler, 61, fell several feet (meters) while entertaining the crowd by dancing around as the sound crew replaced a fuse that blew during the song "Love in an Elevator," said Mike Sanborn, spokesman for the Buffalo Chip Campground, which hosted the Wednesday night concert. An amateur video showed him spinning around before falling off the stage.

A concertgoer said Tyler's head was bleeding and he was holding his shoulder after the fall, but it wasn't immediately clear how seriously he was hurt.

The frontman was airlifted to Rapid City Regional Hospital, Sanborn said, the only major hospital in western South Dakota.

A hospital spokeswoman would not confirm whether Tyler was there, and a representative for Aerosmith's publicity firm said the company was gathering information about the accident.

The band's next concert, which was scheduled for Friday in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was postponed.

On June 28, Tyler hurt his leg at a concert in Uncasville, Connecticut, and the band had to postpone seven shows in July. Tyler also battled pneumonia before the tour began in June, while guitarist Joe Perry fought a knee infection.

Tyler, whose performances often include swaying and grinding on microphone stands adorned with scarves, was dancing on a catwalk Wednesday night that was connected to the main stage.

"He does a lot of dancing on the stage and he does a lot of stuff with his mike stand. He put his stand down and twirled around and stepped backwards off the stage," Sanborn said.

Many in the crowd were surprised and thought it was part of the act, said Jessica Kokesh, a University of South Dakota journalism student who covered the concert for the Rapid City Journal.

"We thought maybe he stage-dived into the crowd, but he didn't get back up," Kokesh said.

"I thought he was falling back to crowd surf."

Tyler landed on a couple of fans, Sanborn said, and security rushed to help him.

Sanborn did not immediately return a call Thursday evening about exactly how high the catwalk was. The crowd cheered when Tyler got up.

"There was like a big sigh, a collective 'Whoa' from everybody," said Chuck Baker, 53, of Denver, who was about 20 rows from the stage when Tyler fell.

The rocker was taken backstage, where a physician attended to him.

Later, Perry told the audience the show would not go on.

"It was an unfortunate end to an extraordinary evening," Sanborn said.

Backstage, Jake Cohen was in the VIP area and didn't see the fall, but said he saw Tyler afterward.

"When they took him out, he was bleeding from his head and holding his shoulder," said Cohen, a salesman for Tyler's Dirico Motorcycles line.

Tyler, known for hits such as "Walk This Way" and "Dream On," attended Sturgis last year to promote his motorcycle line and was back this year to do that again and play at Buffalo Chip.

He was known for heavy drug and alcohol abuse in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Every member of the blues-rock five-piece went to rehab in the mid-1980s, and the group staged an improbable comeback with the MTV generation.

They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Grammy-winning group was scheduled to play its next five shows in Canada.

According to a Ticketmaster Web site and the band's Twitter page, the first of those shows was postponed and there were no further details.

An official with Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, where the band is supposed to play Tuesday, said she hadn't heard anything about a possible cancellation there.

GI Joe: The Baroness nearly burnt while shooting

GI Joe star burnt while shooting
July 21st, 2009 PTI

London: British beauty Sienna Miller was at the centre of an embarrassing on-set accident when she almost burnt her breasts while making her new movie 'G I Joe: The Rise of Cobra'.

The 28-year-old actress who plays femme fatale 'The Baroness' in the action thriller said that she nearly suffered a rather close call while filming an explosion, reported the Daily Mail online.

"Luckily it wasn't my breasts, it was the bit in-between. It got a bit burnt when an explosion got a bit close," said the actor.

And the black leather cat suit she was wearing did not help her either and the 'Alfie' star has vowed to never get into one again.

"I won't be wearing one again. Squeezing myself into that with the aid of talcum powder every day for five months was more than enough. I could barely move in it anyway," she said.

The actor who had dyed her blonde locks raven black for the role said that she has no plans to marry in the near future.

"No plans to get married, no. No one to marry," said the actor who has dated Jude Law and Balthazar Getty in the past.

BMW is out from F1

Will the Formula One bites the dust...

BMW to pull out from Formula One at end of the season

MUNICH: BMW rocked Formula One yesterday by announcing their exit as a team and engine supplier at the end of 2009.

The Munich carmaker’s abrupt decision, after a dismal season on the track and with the industry in crisis, leaves the glamour sport with just four manufacturers — Fiat-owned Ferrari, McLaren’s partners Mercedes, Renault and Toyota.

However, three new teams are due to enter next year with others on standby.

“The BMW Group will not continue their Formula One campaign after the end of the 2009 season,” the Munich carmaker said in a statement issued before a news conference at their company headquarters.

“Resources freed up as a result are to be dedicated to the development of new drive technologies and projects in the field of sustainability. BMW will continue to be actively involved in other motorsports series.”

Team boss Mario Theissen told reporters that the natural scenario would be for a partner to take over the team that BMW bought from their Swiss founder Peter Sauber in 2005.

BMW’s exit is the first prominent withdrawal from the series since Honda quit in December due to tough business conditions.

That team was resurrected as Brawn GP, the current championship leaders who now use Mercedes engines.

BMW’s decision, taken at a board meeting only on Tuesday, came just as the teams were on the verge of signing a new commercial agreement that would have committed them to at least the end of 2012.

It also follows a standoff between the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) and eight of the teams that nearly led to a breakaway championship, plunging the sport into its biggest crisis in 60 years.

“Of course, this was a difficult decision for us. But it’s a resolute step in view of our company’s strategic realignment,” said board of management chairman Norbert Reithofer.

The departure ends the carmaker’s hopes of winning a title with their own team.

The carmaker decided in mid-2005 that supplying engines to former champions Williams was not enough and bought a majority stake in Swiss-based Sauber, renaming the team BMW-Sauber.

They won their first race last season when Poland’s Robert Kubica triumphed in Canada, and challenged for both titles.

This season, however, they have scored just eight points in 10 races and are eighth overall. — Reuters

Late Michael's Moonwalk Memoir

Michael Jackson...an entertainment legend

Jul 28 2009 2:13 PM EDT
Michael Jackson's 'Moonwalk' Memoir To Be Re-Released
Ghostwritten autobiography, originally published in 1988, set for October reissue.

By Eric Ditzian

Plans are already in the works to repurpose almost every shred of Michael Jackson's creative output — music, footage, costumes and more — for various tributes on the big screen, small screen, museum hall and concert stage. Next up is the written word.

Jackson's 1988 ghostwritten memoir, "Moonwalk," is being reissued for publication in October, The Associated Press reports. The reissue will contain a new introduction by a yet-unnamed friend of Jackson's and will have a first printing of 100,000 copies.

In interviews with the AP, Jackson's literary agent, Joy Harris, and the original editor of the book, Shaye Areheart, who is also publishing the reissue, revealed the process behind making "Moonwalk," as well as the harried days after the pop star's death when plans to re-release the book began.

Beginning in the mid '80s, Areheart met with Jackson many times at his Encino, California, home to conduct interviews for the memoir. "He was just a lively, in-touch guy," she said. "And he did have his act together."

They would often sit together by a large fireplace as Areheart asked questions and Jackson spoke answers into a tape recorder. He was "smart and funny and gracious," she said.

Yet the project ended up taking much longer to complete than expected, as Jackson was often occupied with the demands of tours and recording sessions. "His time was constantly not his own," Areheart said.

The book ended up coming out in the spring of 1988 and became a #1 New York Times bestseller. In the memoir, Jackson admitted to being beaten by his father and to having two nose jobs. He dedicated the book to Fred Astaire.

According to Harris, publishers began asking about reprinting the memoir the morning after Jackson's death. She got in touch with his attorneys, who began negotiations and struck a deal with Areheart and her Random House imprint, Harmony.

"It did seem abrupt to me," Harris told the AP. "But when I thought about it, it didn't surprise me, in the way that everything is so immediate these days."

New findings on Organic food

What have we been eating?

Organic food is no healthier, study finds
Wed Jul 29, 2009 12:29pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Organic food has no nutritional or health benefits over ordinary food, according to a major study published Wednesday.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said consumers were paying higher prices for organic food because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007.

A systematic review of 162 scientific papers published in the scientific literature over the last 50 years, however, found there was no significant difference.

"A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance," said Alan Dangour, one of the report's authors.

"Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority."

The results of research, which was commissioned by the British government's Food Standards Agency, were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Sales of organic food have fallen in some markets, including Britain, as recession has led consumers to cut back on purchases.

The Soil Association said in April that growth in sales of organic products in Britain slowed to just 1.7 percent in 2008, well below the average annual growth rate of 26 percent over the last decade, following a plunge in demand at the end of the year.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa

Felipe Massa...Get well soon

Massa takes first steps since being near death

BUDAPEST: Formula One driver Felipe Massa took his first steps yesterday since a high-speed crash at the weekend left him near death.

Ferrari said Massa was set to leave AEK hospital’s intensive care unit later in the day as his condition continues to improve.

“Felipe speaks, can sit upright and was even able to take his first steps,” the Italian team said in a statement.

“From the clinical and radiological point of view, everything is going extremely well.”

The 28-year-old Brazilian was hit in the helmet by a loose part from another car and crashed into a protective tire barrier at 190kph during qualifying on Saturday at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Ferrari said Massa would remain at the Budapest hospital for the next few days.

Massa’s father, Luiz Antonio, said his son still doesn’t remember anything about the accident.

“If it continues like this, maybe on Thursaday (today) Felipe can be transferred to the hospital in Paris, where he would continue his recovery until he can return home,” Luiz Antonio told Brazil’s GloboEsporte.com on Tuesday.

“But we still have to obey what the doctors say. The most important now is to know that his life is not at risk.”

Yesterday, Brazilian driver and friend Popo Bueno said Massa had asked about his chances of racing in Valencia in three weeks, the next race on the F1 calendar.

“Friends and relatives want to see him well, at home, healthy. But the driver always wants to return to racing soon,” Bueno said.

“But only the doctors can know if he will be able to return this year or the next.”

Ferrari also said company chairman Luca di Montezemolo would visited Massa yesterday. — AP

New hope for blindness

No more blindness in the future

Omega-3 may prevent blindness in the elderly: Study
By Stephen Daniells, 23-Jul-2009

Related topics: Innovation

A diet high in omega-3 fatty acids may prevent the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the over-50s, suggests a new study.

Researchers from the National Eye Institute in Bethesda found that a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids could retard the progression of lesions in a mouse model of AMD. The fatty acids were also associated with an improvement in some lesions.

"The results in these mice are in line with the epidemiological studies of AMD risk reduction by long chain omega-3 fatty acids," wrote the researchers in the American Journal of Pathology.

It is known that omega-3 fatty acids, and particularly DHA, play an important role in the layer of nerve cells in the retina, and studies have already reported that omega-3 may protect against the onset of AMD.

Indeed, a meta-analysis published in the June 2008 issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology found that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids and fish may reduce the risk of AMD by up to 38 per cent. Scientists from the University of Melbourne in Australia reported that the benefits were most pronounced against late (more advanced) AMD, while eating fish twice a week was associated with a reduced risk of both early and late AMD.

AMD low-down

AMD is a degenerative retinal disease that causes central vision loss and leaves only peripheral vision. It is the leading cause of legal blindness for people over 55 years of age in the Western world, according to AMD Alliance International.

Despite the fact that approximately 25 to 30 million people worldwide are affected by AMD, awareness of the condition is low, says the Alliance. And as the generation of Baby Boomers gets older, the Alliance expects incidence to be on the rise and triple by 2025.

Looking at mice

The Bethesda-based researchers, led by Dr Chi-Chao Chan, found that mice fed a high omega-3 fatty acid diet displayed a slower development of lesions in their retina, compared to animals fed a low omega-3 diet. Furthermore, some of the mice in the omega-3 group displayed some reversion of the lesions.

Looking at the potential mechanism behind the effects, the researchers noted lower levels of inflammatory molecules, such as prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene B4, and higher levels of anti-inflammatory molecules, such as prostaglandin D2.

“A diet enriched in EPA and DHA can ameliorate the progression of retinal lesions in their mouse model of AMD,” wrote the researchers.

“This murine model provides a useful tool to evaluate therapies that might delay the development of AMD,” they concluded.

The study was funded by The Intramural Research Program of the National Eye Institute, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Health Assistance Foundation.
